Here’s something you don’t read every day: A beauty pageant in Brazil turned ugly after Sheislane Hayalla, 23, the runner-up of the 2015 Miss Amazonas pageant, snatched the crown off winner Carolina Toledo’s head, threw it to the ground, and stormed off the stage in a rage.
Hayalla initially hugged the 20-year-old Toledo (pictured above) when she was declared the winner, but a few seconds later, she stepped forward, ripped the crown off Toledo’s head, and then stalked off the stage, stopping only to blow the audience a kiss and accuse Toledo of having bought the crown. (The winner represents the state of Amazonas in the national Miss Brazil pageant.)
While Toledo has not commented on the events, saying only that she “doesn’t have words to express how she feels,” Hayalla published a follow-up video apologizing for her attitude, but not for her actions, arguing that she wanted to show that “money could not buy everything” and that she only “did what was in [her] heart.”
She also took to her personal Facebook page to criticize the way the event was organized. “I wanted to express my disapproval of the actions in the preparations for Miss Amazonas 2015. I do not regret having protested,” she wrote Saturday night.”I believe I have planted change in this great contest. I wanted something clean and honest.”
It’s unclear whether Hayalla will be allowed to maintain her runner-up status after this. I’m going to go ahead and guess no, though the video of Hayalla’s spectacular meltdown has (naturally) gone viral, and she’s already been turned into a meme. That’s one way to get people’s attention, I guess!
