If you’re jonesing to wear a deep lip this New Year’s, wear it one of these four flawless ways.
Makeup artist Robin Black shows Cosmopolitan.com four different, yet equally gorgeous ways to wear a plum lip, whether you want a more minimal look (that says, “daytime”) or a more intense finish (perfect for a night out). Do as many steps as you want, depending on how dramatic you want the look to be — you’ll look gorgeous no matter how far you go.
1. Build your look: After you’ve applied your foundation, start out by swiping on a sheer wash of lavender-colored eye shadow, a burgundy lipstick, and a few coats of mascara. Robin used the following on model Meron: CoverGirl UltraSmooth Foundation, CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in “Blazing Purple,” Covergirl Colorlicious Lipstick in “Euphoria,” and CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara in “Very Black.”
2. Create a faux flush using a mauve blush that falls in the same color family: This gives a subtle monochromatic look that is to-die-for pretty. Try CoverGirl Cheekers Blush in “Plum Plush” Then, make your wine lip color look more matte by pulling a tissue apart so you are left with one ply, holding it gently over your lips, and powdering over them using translucent loose powder and a soft powder brush. Robin used CoverGirl Professional Loose Powder in “Translucent Light” on Meron.
3. Layer on black lip liner for an even darker lip look: Using your favorite black eyeliner pencil, fill in your lips and then layer the berry lipstick you used in step one over it for a blackened plum hue that is more elegant than emo. Try CoverGirl Ink It! By Perfect Point Plus in “Black Ink.”
4. Layer on the lip gloss: Alter your lip color entirely with a purple iridescent gloss for a fun and flirty finish. Robin swiped CoverGirl Colorlicious Lip Lava in “Look It’s Lava!” over Meron’s lips.
