New York Fashion Week kicked off in style on day one. Among those showing at the Lincoln Center – the event’s main venue − was California-based label BCBG Max Azria, which has for the past couple of decades been purveyors of a luxe-boho, West coast elegance.
Pretty in pink
Purveyor of cool and comfortable attire, Marissa Webb referenced the designer sweatshirt trend with jackets created in grey marl. There were some pink hues on display too – very of-the-moment, and expected to be much in evidence at this fashion week.
Grace and favour
The fashion jewellery line Dannijo is big on oxydised metals studded with shards of crystals, and is a favourite with celebrities and socialites. Dannijo creators Danielle Snyder and her sister Jodie Snyder are flamboyant boho girls around town, so perhaps it’s no surprise that models in ballerina garb displayed their latest collection.
Sunny side up
Models pose backstage at the Brandon Sun show at Industria Studios. The designer hosted his first-ever runway show, inspired by Art Noveau illustration, and included glamorous touches such as a split skirt suit in metallic jacquard.
Carin Rodebjer’s new collection included a slouchy suit that drapes loosely and encapsulated the mood of the show. Crisp, mannish shirts and slinky silk robes added to the sexy-but-not-obvious aesthestic. Reversible striped blanket coats added edge.
The bold and the beautiful
Models pose backstage at the Tocca show. The label is now overseen by Emma Fletcher, who this season has gone for a more overtly sexy look, with velvet suits, sheer fabrics, the occasional slip dress and even some bold under-as-outerwear statements.
Tome designers Ramon Martin and Ryan Lobo make clothes for confident, smart women, and this collection is no exception. The look is cool, pulled-together, grown-up – even the pink satin silk.
Age of elegance
There were effortlessly elegant moments in the Creatures of the Wind show, with sweeping wool coats and some unmistakeably 1970s touches. Designers Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters based many of the silhouettes in this collection on traditional eastern shapes such as wraps and kimono-style tunics.
The South Californian duo Max and Lubov Azria of BCBG Max Azria has always favoured a laid-back, feminine look , though their Fall show saw signs of a new, more urban edge and a nod to the 1990s.
Actress Taryn Manning (of TV series Orange ts the New Black) was among the celebrities to lend their support to the Red Dress Campaign, a heart-disease charity gala that takes place each year during New York Fashion Week.
